A closer look · Our reading of the work
What to look for
In Harrow County, Bunn makes recognition frightening. The people who know Emmy best may be the quickest to decide what she must become. Follow the contrast between her small acts of care and the community’s interpretation of them. The grotesque boy in the woods can feel less threatening than familiar neighbors because the story keeps asking who will let her choose for herself.
