A closer look · Our reading of the work
What to look for
The Autumnal makes a fresh start appealing before exposing its cost. Kraus gives Kat and Sybil concrete things to want, including a home with space for both of them. Watch how questions about Kat’s childhood become difficult to separate from questions about the town. The folk horror gains force because the mother-daughter relationship has already made staying feel consequential.
