A closer look · Our reading of the work
What to look for
In Ice Cream Man, notice how quickly a short story gives a stranger something to hope for. Prince makes the hurt recognizable before the impossible arrives. The anthology structure means there is no dependable hero to protect you: each new cast asks you to care again, even when the previous story has offered little comfort.
