A closer look · Our reading of the work
What to look for
Dell’Edera makes James’s isolation visible before a monster needs to appear. Notice the gaps between him and other children, and the change from a close face to a figure small inside a room. Distance becomes a way of reading vulnerability. That control of space gives Erica’s willingness to sit and listen its weight, even before the action begins.
